Data Ownership Platform for City Mobility Data Management

In this article, we discuss

Start 4.0, as part of the 2023 call for industrial research projects, financed with PNRR funds, has provided over 170,000 euros of contribution for the development of a platform (Data Ownership Platform) for sharing data of passengers and customers of public mobility integrated in full compliance with the regulations on privacy and management of data sharing.

The project of Ecosteer Srl and AMT spa, currently underway, aims to develop a data exchange system that allows each citizen to directly grant or revoke the visibility of their information (e.g. GPS position, purchase of a ticket on a site, etc.) to the different purposes of use (e.g. improvement of the public transport service, traffic management, personalized marketing, etc.) This platform will be based on Ecosteer’s Data Visibility Control Overlay (DVCO), a “back-end” software that guarantees citizens/consumers exclusive control over the sharing of their data with third parties, automating compliance with the GDPR.

At the heart of this system is the desire to preserve privacy and data security. For citizens/consumers, in fact, activating and deactivating the visibility of their data towards multiple destinations of use, without any intermediation of the company that manages the technical infrastructure for sharing data, guarantees the maximum level of control over their data and transparency. For companies, too, not having to intercede on behalf of the legitimate owners of the data, this is a huge saving in terms of costs and legal liabilities.

This system, which uses various enabling technologies, including cryptographic protocols, IoT and sensors for real-time data collection, makes the management of consent to the processing of personal data natively compliant with privacy regulations – and with the new rules imposed by the European Data Act.
