Field data acquisition
Different technologies are used depending on the context: static laser scanner for high-precision surveys of buildings, plants, infrastructure and cultural heritage; indoor SLAM mobile mapping for complex, extensive or hard-to-access environments; vehicle-based mobile mapping for linear infrastructure, road networks and large urban/extra-urban areas. Direct ownership of the instrumentation ensures high operational flexibility and rapid response.

Acquired data is processed by specialized technicians using the most advanced software suites for registration, georeferencing, cleaning and optimization of point clouds. Activities can be integrated with high-resolution photography, topographic data and other available geospatial information.

Case History
Technology transfer centre
As part of a project for a technology transfer centre, an initiative with a total value of more than €12.6 million, START4.0 carried out a cultural heritage digitalisation project worth approximately €160,000, coordinating and performing three-dimensional surveying activities using LiDAR technologies.
Initial situation
The centre identified the need to create a high-precision digital database to enhance and manage the exhibition spaces and local cultural heritage.
Solution
The data acquisition campaigns covered eight museum and cultural sites, requiring careful operational planning and the use of advanced equipment in settings of significant historical and architectural value.
The acquired data were processed to produce high-resolution three-dimensional models and point clouds for the development of virtual and augmented reality applications, Digital Twins, monitoring systems and cultural heritage conservation solutions. The project demonstrated how advanced digitalisation technologies can enable innovation in the cultural sector by providing a reliable digital infrastructure on which to develop new services for the protection, management and public enjoyment of cultural heritage.
The service model developed can be readily replicated across the entire cultural heritage value chain, extending surveying, digitalisation and enhancement activities to museums, monumental complexes, castles, archives, smaller sites and other cultural venues through a modular offering and pricing proportionate to the complexity of each project.
Industrial company in the bitumen sector
As part of a technology transfer centre project, START4.0 delivered a technology guidance and transfer service worth approximately €10,000 for an industrial company operating in the bitumen sector.
Initial situation
The project was designed to demonstrate the value of reality capture technologies in the digitalisation of industrial assets.
Solution
The project involved a three-dimensional survey of the entire production facility, covering approximately 90,000 m², using vehicle-mounted Mobile Mapping systems. This was integrated with high-precision terrestrial laser scanner surveys of the oxidation plant area, covering approximately 750 m² and characterised by a complex network of pipes, tanks and industrial equipment.
The activities produced high-density point clouds and navigable three-dimensional models that can be used as a data foundation for Asset Management processes, BIM modelling and Digital Twin development. In addition to carrying out the surveys, START4.0 supported the company in assessing the operational potential of the technologies adopted, fostering an innovation pathway focused on the digital management of the plants and the improvement of maintenance and facility management activities.
At the end of the project, the entire information asset produced was delivered to the client, which acquired full ownership and usage rights as a strategic digital asset. The georeferenced point cloud constitutes a queryable and reusable three-dimensional dataset that can be used over time. On this basis, the client has been able to launch subsequent design activities, prepare tenders for BIM modelling and plant upgrades, develop Digital Twin applications, and support future maintenance, revamping and infrastructure lifecycle management initiatives without the need to repeat the survey campaigns.
Port system authority
As part of a project for a technology transfer centre, an initiative with a total value of more than €19.9 million, START4.0 carried out a three-dimensional survey campaign of the infrastructure managed by a strategic port authority, contributing to the creation of the digital database required to develop the Digital Twin of the port and logistics system.
Initial situation
The objective of the project was to build the digital information base for the port and logistics system, as an enabling asset for the development of the Digital Twin and the introduction of advanced monitoring, simulation and decision-support tools for port infrastructure management.
Solution
The activities combined vehicle-based Mobile Mapping and terrestrial laser scanning to survey the port areas, together with an innovative solution for digitising the Canal. The same Mobile Mapping platform normally installed on a vehicle was adapted and mounted on a vessel, enabling continuous, high-precision acquisition of the canal banks and adjacent infrastructure directly from the water. This approach extended the capabilities of Mobile Mapping technology to the maritime environment, reducing acquisition times and ensuring comprehensive coverage of areas that are difficult to survey using traditional methods.
The integration of the different surveying technologies resulted in georeferenced point clouds and high-resolution three-dimensional models, providing a strategic information base for Asset Management applications, infrastructure monitoring and maintenance planning.
