START4.0 is a partner of ARTOUR: artificial intelligence and robotics at the service of cultural tourism

In this article, we discuss

START4.0 is a partner in the ARTOUR project – Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Tourism, co-funded by the Interreg Italy-France Maritime Program, which promotes the adoption of emerging technologies to enhance cultural and environmental heritage in cross-border areas.

The project aims to foster the integration of artificial intelligence, robotics, and innovative digital solutions in the tourism and culture sectors, with the goal of improving accessibility, enjoyment, and promotion of cultural heritage. ARTOUR also aims to build a collaborative ecosystem among the regions involved—Liguria, Tuscany, Sardinia, Corsica, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur—based on the sharing of expertise, services, and infrastructure for innovation.

Within this context, START4.0 plays a key role in supporting the digital transformation of cultural and tourism businesses. The Competence Center makes its know-how available by offering technology consulting services, specialized training programs, and innovation support, with the goal of facilitating the informed and effective adoption of artificial intelligence-based technologies, particularly by SMEs.

The project also involves the development and testing of innovative prototype solutions capable of integrating culture, creativity, and advanced technologies, thereby contributing to the sustainability and competitiveness of the tourism sector. In this context, START4.0 promotes a “test before invest” approach, enabling businesses to concretely assess the benefits and applications of technologies before adopting them.

ARTOUR is part of the innovative and sustainable tourism sector, addressing the challenge of strengthening regional competitiveness through the strategic use of AI for the management, promotion, and marketing of cultural and environmental assets. A central element of the project is the creation of a stable cross-border network of technology transfer centers capable of providing advanced services and supporting business innovation.

The project is coordinated by RAISE Liguria and is carried out through a network of highly qualified partners located in the main areas covered by the cooperation program. Specifically, the partnership includes leading organizations in their respective regions: START4.0 – a Competence Center based in Genoa for Liguria; the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie Nice Côte d’Azur for the French Riviera; E.INS – Ecosystem of Innovation for Next Generation Sardinia in Sassari; ARTES 4.0 – Advanced Robotics and Enabling Digital Technologies and Systems in Pisa for Tuscany; and the Coopérative Petra Patrimonia Corsica in Bastia.

This cross-border network enables the integration of complementary expertise and state-of-the-art infrastructure, fostering the development of innovative services and technology transfer to businesses in the tourism and cultural sectors.

The project activities include an initial phase of analyzing and mapping stakeholders and business needs, followed by the provision of technology transfer services, training, and financing tools, with the aim of actively supporting the sector’s digital transformation.

By participating in ARTOUR, START4.0 reinforces its commitment to promoting safe, sustainable, and future-oriented technologies, contributing to the development of an increasingly smart, digital, and competitive tourism sector.
