The composition of the public/private partnership which was formed into an Association on January 21st 2019, involves 5 public entities (the National Research Council, the Italian Institute of Technology, the Port Authority of Western Ligurian Sea, the Port Authority of Eastern Ligurian Sea and the National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work) and 33 companies.
The latter were selected through the response to a public notice of expression of interest on the basis of a process of evaluation of specific technical characteristics and aspects of economic soundness consistent with the Center’s programmatic aims.
The presence of Large Enterprises with an international reference market, of the IIT, of the CNR, the collaboration with the University of Genoa and in view of their participation in initiatives and projects strongly related to the areas of reference, allows the CC to benefit from an extremely extensive network of relationships with companies and other research organizations currently not directly involved in the partnership.
Fundamental is the role of the SMEs involved in the partnership which, together with Large Enterprises, represent the entire production chain in the reference application domains.
The great involvement of SMEs in the Center’s activities also makes it possible to effectively seize the opportunity to activate, within the same SMEs, a process of technological strengthening and consolidation with direct benefits on the activities of the Center for the development of services, projects and technology transfer initiatives that will take into account the very wide range of SMEs active on the regional and national territory in the reference domains.
With the foundation of the Association START4.0 is intended to establish the highly specialized Competence Center referred to the results of the selection procedure carried out by the Ministry of Economic Development following the 29/01/2018 Decree.
The activities of START 4.0 focus on five application domains: ENERGY – TRANSPORT – WATER SYSTEMS – PRODUCTION – PORT, through the application and development of solutions that refer to a subset of enabling technologies Industry 4.0 with respect to a specific application, that of the protection of strategic infrastructures and their optimized design.
The Competence Center will develop its actions referring to all the possible types of security, that is: Safety, Security and, obviously, Cyber Security.
In the current context, a full development of Industry 4.0 and digital infrastructures cannot disregard security in the holistic sense, that is to say, that reconciles the three declensions described above, ensuring a comprehensive and above all predictive vision of both internal and external threats.
Global security must take into account risk management solutions, assuming that accidents will certainly happen: it is a question of being able to predict them, to manage them correctly in the emergency, and to contain their effects ensuring a rapid recovery.
The Start 4.0 purposes are:
a) Orientation, particularly for SMEs, in collaboration with DIH of Genoa Confindustria, through the preparation of a series of tools aimed at supporting companies in assessing their level of digital and technological maturity.
b) Training, promote and disseminate skills in Industry 4.0 enabling technologies through classroom training activities, webinars and real applications, supporting companies in adapting to new scenarios with concrete benefits in terms of cost reduction and increased competitiveness
c) Innovation Projects, industrial research and experimental development and provision of technology transfer services in Industry 4.0, through actions to stimulate the demand for innovation by enterprises.
The START4.0 Center intends to set up the Training and Research Facilities Network 4.0 with the aim of enhancing the complex system of structures already present in the territory, consolidating the existing one and strengthening its catchment area and, therefore, its use.
The Training and Research Facilities Network 4.0 consists of 9 infrastructure nodes which will be joined by a tenth structure (Port 4.0 Laboratory) created through the development of this project.
START 4.0 collaborates with Liguria region, the University of Genoa, the National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications, the Digital Innovation Hub Liguria, the National Interuniversity Consortium for Informatics, the Chamber of Commerce of Genoa, the High Institute of Communication and Information Technology
